Review
This CD reissues the first recordings by the legendary Bunk Johnson. Cut in New Orleans on primitive acetates, the trumpeter is teamed with trombonist Jim Robinson and clarinetist George Lewis (both of whom would be in his regular band soon), plus a four-piece rhythm section, for nine numbers. Bunk's playing is primitive, as is Lewis's, but also listenable despite the erratic recording quality. Closing this set are nine minutes of "talking records" that feature Johnson reminiscing about the past. In reality, this release is more important historically than musically; get Bunk's final recordings (on Delmark) first. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

scans and 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 parts

This four CD limited-edition box set from Mosaic MR6-125 (which was also made available as six LP’s) features all of the recordings that trumpeter-arranger Shorty Rogers made for the Atlantic and EMI labels. Six titles from 1951 find Rogers leading an octet based on Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool nonet and featuring solos from altoist Art Pepper, the tenor of Jimmy Giuffre, and pianist Hampton Hawes.
Rogers also heads a quintet with altoist Bud Shank in 1954, a quintet with Giuffre (tripling on clarinet, tenor, and baritone) in 1955, and some slightly larger groups (with such sidemen as the Candoli Brothers, trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison, altoists Herb Geller and Shank, pianists Lou Levy and Pete Jolly, and drummer Shelly Manne, among others). Although West Coast jazz has received a bad rap by East Coast writers through the years, Rogers shows that his recordings actually contained plenty of fire and swing, looking back toward the swing era and ahead simultaneously. Among the many highlights of this essential set are “Popo,” “Lotus Bud,” “Not Really the Blues,” “Trickleydidlier,” “Martians Go Home,” “Martians Come Back,” “March of the Martians,” and “Martians Stay Home.”

Chet Baker's performance here is both fragile and passionate. Baker is joined by Van Morrison and reunited with Elvis Costello, with whom he recorded Shipbuilding at Ronnie Scott's intimate English club. In interviews with Costello, the pain and happiness hidden between his wrinkled, tired face pour out like so many notes.

Chet Baker's appearance at Ronnie Scott's in London was taped near the end of his life, when the ravages of drug addiction were apparent in his face as well as his demeanor on stage, but the magic was still present in his playing. Baker starts slowly with the bittersweet ballad "Ellen David," following it with his fragile vocal interpretation of a lightly swinging "Just Friends," though he is a decent scat singer. "Shifting Down" is an obscure work by Kenny Dorham that is one of the high points of this concert for Baker. Unfortunately, the visuals to the opening of the funky "Love for Sale" are ruined somewhat by the director's inane decision to emulate MTV videos and use a series of stills instead of just sticking to the action on stage. Interview excerpts taped offstage are interspersed between some of the tracks, though Elvis Costello's technique as an interviewer is rather erratic. Guest segments include a painfully dull rendition of "Send in the Clowns," featuring Van Morrison blandly reciting the lyrics with a cheat sheet in hand for reference; Elvis Costello also has to have the lyrics handy while performing his numbers with Baker ("The Very Thought of You" and a medley of "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "I'm a Fool to Want You"), which he delivers with a straight pop approach rather than trying to improvise, although he at least seems to know these standards. Pianist Michel Grailler and bassist Riccardo del Fra provide excellent support, the camera work and sound are excellent except for a few minor lapses, and the audience is respectfully silent until the conclusion of each piece -- a near impossibility in most nightclubs in Baker's homeland. Fans of Chet Baker will greatly enjoy this DVD, warts and all. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
